Japan opened her borders, and Japanese art influenced the European goldsmiths. Art Nouveau developed with floral motives similar to those of the Romantic period. In addition, fairy-like female forms as well as various types of insects, who appear to have modelled for the drafts of new pieces of jewellery, came into being. Semi-precious stones such as amethyst, peridot or opal in broken colors were processed alongside enamel and multi-colored gold. During this period hunting jewellery, in which deer teeth (so-called ‘Grandln’) were worked instead of gems, was also developed.
